A h*t, Actually: The Definitive, 100% Objective Guide to Modern Cinema ~ Lindy West (2020)
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Having just watched Love, Actually for the holidays, it feels like the right time to review Sh*t, Actually by Lindy West!
This hilarious book is 23 reviews of popular movies from The Fugitive (which West determines to be the only good movie ever made) to Shawshank Redemption to Love, Actually (where the book gets its name). To say that this is a niche book is an understatement- you will truly only enjoy the movie reviews/essays if you are familiar with (or better yet a fan of) the movies she reviews. Basing the movies on a scale of zero to 10 DVDs of The Fugitive, West’s trademark wit is evident throughout the entire book.
If you are a movie buff, or a fan of Lindy West’s past books (Shrill and The Witches Are Coming), you will enjoy this book. I also listened to the audiobook while driving and doing housework, as is my wont, but I found myself laughing out loud and replaying sections, such as the Forrest Gump review to my husband.
“I love making fun or movies. I love turning a piece of criticism into a piece of entertainment. I love pointing out a plot hole that makes a super fan write me an angry email… I love being flippant and careless and earnest and meticulous all at once” is how West opens the book and all I can say is that she succeeds MIGHTILY. I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been "super married" to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.
My first book - How Not To Blog: Finding Myself, One Post at a Time is available on Amazon (in eBook formats for you clever tech readers, and paperback for those of us who love that new book smell!)
I have tried a podcast - it's still on Apple and Google Podcasts - but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
