Intimate Partner Violence and Femicide
Due to the confines of COVID-19, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Accountability and Justice contends that the number of victims of femicide (the murder of women or girls) rose from 146 in 2019, to 160 in 2020.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We know that Indigenous women and WOC are most likely to be victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), due to the inherent racial bias to our white supremacist systems. They are less likely to have access to interventions, and even when they seek help, they are less likely to be believed, or protected.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On Feb 16, 2021, the Canadian Gov’t brought forth legislation to:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Combat intimate-partner and gender-based violence, and self-harm involving firearms by creating “red flag” and “yellow flag” laws. These laws would allow people, such as concerned friends or relatives, to apply to the courts for the immediate removal of an individual’s firearms, and allow a Chief Firearms Officer to suspend and review an individual’s licence privileges to acquire or use firearms.” – Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada

“There were over 107,000 victims of police-reported intimate-partner violence (IPV) in Canada in 2019. For 660 victims of IPV, a firearm was present. Women accounted for almost 8 in 10 victims of all IPV incidents and they were even more likely to be the victim in the 660 IPV incidents where a firearm was present.”

What can you do to help? Make yourself a safe person for women facing abuse to come to. Contact your MP and offer your support of the proposed Bill. Raise awareness of IPV.

What have we been up to lately? Not much. Even less than usual, given that we are in a global pandemic that has rules and restrictions that keep changing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our old fellow is getting older by the day and we are spending as much time with him as we can. He is slower, less sturdy, and less prone to zoomies. His coat is more grey and brown than it was a decade ago, his gait less agile. He doesn’t catch himself when he falls, and has a constant upset stomach. He can’t always see that there is food in his bowl, and has to be served the same dish 3 or 4 times before he actually knows he has eaten. He doesn’t hear as well, but if you crackle a treat bag, his age is suddenly less and he is off like a shot. He talks less than his used to, and sometimes saddens me by going several days without speaking at all.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What hasn’t changed? His love for his people. His disdain for animals on his porch. His need to be near me. His ability to tell when his kids come home. His companionship of the kids when they aren’t feeling well. His kitty kisses. His forehead nuzzles. His standing on my chest and waking me in the middle of the night to have me watch him eat. His Sphinx-like napping pose. His insistence that I relinquish my reading chair when he wants to sit on it. His belief that books and laptop keyboards are the best places to nap, especially if Mama is using them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And most of all – that he is the best cat that I have ever met, and my love and adoration of his handsome face and beautiful, funny personality.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In order to have less wasted food, and to try to stick to a “no-Dominos-pizza-because-I’m-too-tired-to-cook”, and ultimately be kinder to my bank account, I have gone back to meal planning and meal prep.

To be fair, I should never have stopped doing it because it’s harder to start once I stop, than it is to keep moving forward. But regardless, I am back to it.

For Christmas, my husband received a One Sheet Pan cookbook, where everything is cooked at once on the same sheet pan.

This was teriyaki steak tips and broccoli, with rice (rice was not made on the sheet pan) and turned out quite nice!

It has been 3 months since the sensor on my dryer broke.

3 months of hanging my clothes and towels to dry.

3 months of understanding one tiny modicum of how a huge portion of the world lives without the convenience of electric appliances.

It was fracking annoying. I hated it. I hated crispy towels and 3 days to dry jeans, but that frustration was borne of the privilege to not have to do that every day of my life.

Not having a dryer was frustrating, but it’s nothing like not having food, or access to clean drinking water, or watching my children die because I cannot access health care, or worrying my son will be shot for playing at the playground in a hoodie.

My dryer is fixed, and I am over the moon. But in perspective, not having my dryer was a big ol’ first world problem.
