Originally intended to simply focus on book reviews, over time, KaliDesautelsReads has morphed into its own entity.
I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been “super married” to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.
My first book – How Not To Blog: Finding Myself, One Post at a Time is available on Amazon (in eBook formats for you clever tech readers, and paperback for those of us who love that new book smell!)
I have tried a podcast – it’s still on Apple and Google Podcasts – but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Time for beautiful charcuterie boards (this board was made by my talented hubby @stagethreestudio; the delicious food was courtesy of my amazing sister-in-law and brother; the food staging was @tduperron), yummy foods, Holiday music on a hi-fi, goblets of red wine, laughter and hugs.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love this time of the year!!!!!
Back in the office today, and out of Instagram jail! I am happy to be back at my desk, and with my work friends (especially the birthday girl @monaaxox) but I do miss last week’s coworker. Timon is great at sleeping, snoring, whining, mewling, walking on my computer, sitting on my papers, and being genuinely adorable.
This picture shows 3 of my favourite things in the world: Mona, Christmas, and beautiful, fluffy puppies in jammers!! 2 years ago, I was lucky enough to meet the work bestie I never knew I needed. My opposite in almost every obvious way that a person can be, but also my twin in a lot of the ways that matter (… like when Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger were Twins… LoL). Happy birthday, Mona! You deserve all the best things life has to offer, all the happiness in the world, all the puppies can manage, and perfectly shaken BCAAs! I am proud of you, grateful for you, and love you lots.
Thank you for always understanding the difference between “I’m fine” and “I’m fine”! ❤️
Woman Crush Wednesday – you know the coolest girl you know, who happens to be the strongest girl you know, who happens to look like a model, lift weights like the Rock, has the greatest smile with clinically perfect teeth, who cares enough to get mad at you when you need it, and loves you enough to sit on she floor with you while your world falls apart? You know the woman who is the person you can’t wait to tell something funny to, because her laugh is so infectious? You know the person who gets that you need to move her cup ever so slightly to one side to take an Instagram picture before you eat? The one who puts Christmas records on before she necessarily wants to because she knows it will make you happy? The one you can give the world’s worst game hint to and she will get it right away? The girl who is quietly fighting her own house fires while handing out shock blankets and hosing down yours? The girl who makes you laugh til you fall over crying, and that you can text and know that she will send the perfect gif in response?
This is her. Danielle is that girl. I’m just so lucky that she is that girl to me.
Also – she is going to roll her eyes and gag at this… but that’s just her. And I love everything about her.
One of my favourite afternoon snacks is frozen fruit left to defrost all day… I have discovered it works much better with other fruit than with raspberries. So now it is sugarless smushed Jam for a snack… not quite the same! LOL
When you walk to your car in the dark, do you hear Peter Thomas narrating “She left her friend’s home at 10:34pm, saying she would be going straight home… she never arrived. What happened in the 5 kilometres between her friend’s home and her own driveway? It appears that she vanished… without a trace???” No? Just me? Hmmmm… maybe it’s time to move from Forensic Files to something more cheerful…
HELLO INSTAWORLD!!! I am FREEEE! What do you call a year that sees your husband diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer, your family and chosen family suffer from ALL. THE. STUFF., and just when you think you’ve rounded the corner… you lose your flipping job!?!? HEY! It’s 2019, baby! This year there has been no waiting for the other shoe to drop, it has been raining fracking shoes all year! Why dodge them suckers? They’re coming whether you dodge them or not… so what do we do??? We pour some wine, learn how to make a Seth Rogan and Snoop Dogg special, yoga all the time, and listen to Christmas carols all. Damn. Day. And most definitely start counting down to 2020.
My sister offered me this affirmation on Sunday, and I have whole heartedly accepted it. To the point that this is my lock screen – which we have determined is both inspirational and pretty darn aggressive!
Thank you, Katie! You are one of the very best things that I earned from Save On. You are the sweetest, and give the best hugs! (Even if today’s pink eye challenge was to NOT hug you, I know it was there!) I’m so lucky to call you my friend, and I am so grateful for early morning polar bear coffee!!! Love you lots!! @mousykat90
