Hi.

My name is Sadie Rose Desautels. Yesterday, I moved from Mexico to my new home in Canada and I have to say, I am a pretty big fan.

There are comfy beds, kids who think I am amazing and play with me, and my Mama and Daddy seem to be good at the whole food, cuddle, kiss thing.

I’m not shy, and my tail seems to wag at least 89% of the time. I’m not to sure about my fur brother – he is the only one who has no interest in playing with me.

Oh, also I get a bit excited and need to learn to always go pee outside. But I know some commands – I can sit, I can stay, and I don’t know why but my human brother loooooves to shake my paw. (I don’t mind! I get a treat when I do that, so it works out for me.)

I am affectionate and really really like cuddling. My foster parents in Mexico were so good to me, and taught me good manners.

Also – my mama said to please don’t mind that in addition to my brother Timon, I will be showing up a lot on her Instagram. Don’t worry – you’ll love me! Everyone else around here seems to!

Imagine losing your babies for no other reason than that your family heritage tracks back to pre-contact.

We are at more than ONE THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED AND FIVE children who were scooped and never went home.

Let that number sit with you. Hold it in your heart, and listen to what Indigenous people are telling you.

This is Canada’s shame.

This is what we have been hiding in unmarked graves.

This is “at least we aren’t as racist as the US”.

This is “we welcome everyone”.

This is the “Canadian Mosaic”.

This is what we don’t want you to see when we tell the world that we are just so nice.

This is “the world needs more Canada”.

This is families torn to shreds.

This is inherited trauma.

This is systemic genocide.

Why the hell are we surprised???

We should be angry. We should be ashamed. We should be apologetic. We should be seeking reconciliation.

But we should NOT be surprised.

We live in a country where indigenous peoples consistently and repeatedly annihilated for hundreds of years. The existence of Canada has only been accomplished by destroying the people who were here first.

We STILL claim to be an anti-racist “mosaic” that includes people no matter who they are and where they are from, but this is not, nor has it ever been true.

We have just been very good at hiding the awful things we have done from the rest of the world.

Now our skeletons are finally being revealed, in the most literal way imaginable, and we have the audacity to be SURPRISED by being outed for the awful hypocrisy that has been and is Canada.

Calls to “fix” this are laughable, as how does one fix a multi century genocide? It’s not possible. We need to own this awful history, air it, and work towards reconciliation and listening to the indigenous peoples who have been screaming for our attention.

We need to do so much better.

We need to make amends however we can.

But don’t tell me that you are SURPRISED that there are hundreds, thousands of indigenous babies secretly buried in our soil.

On this day, we celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, outstanding achievements, and valuable contributions to society by the nation’s Indigenous peoples. in Canada, we have 3 Aboriginal groups – the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples. personally, my family has lineage in the Mi’kmaq First Nations tribe.

This celebratory day is shared by the summer solstice (aka the longest day of the year!). it was specifically chosen as this day because of the important symbolism of the day to many Indigenous peoples. around the country, many celebrate through cultural performances, displays of indigenous art and events.

Many Indigenous communities are also calling upon the federal government to make #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay a statutory holiday.
