@gymkatchick inspired me to post something. This might be my simplest tattoo, but it also might be my most cherished. When I first got it I didn’t think much of it, I got it in honour of my sister – she had told me all about the concept and what it meant to her. She told me that she had considered suicide and I honestly at the time thought “no fucking way, she’s just exaggerating” We have a good family, she has her own family, she travels, like shits good in her life. I knew she always struggled with anxiety (even as kids) but had no idea how bad her depression got. Then two other people who are very close to me, told me about their suicide attempts and again I was floored. I got the tattoo so people would know they aren’t alone and since I got it (about a year ago) I’ve had some many people ask me about it or share their story or show me theirs. It’s so important that people are willing to talk but also listen. My reaction to my sister’s story (although internal) was about as poor a reaction as you could have. I try to be as open and receptive as I can, but it’s important to be aware. Nobody should ever go through that alone and feel that helpless and trapped. #worldsuicidepreventionday #love #listen #semicolontattoo #semicolonproject #suicide #notalone #family #speakup @kalijd

I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been "super married" to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.
My first book - How Not To Blog: Finding Myself, One Post at a Time is available on Amazon (in eBook formats for you clever tech readers, and paperback for those of us who love that new book smell!)
I have tried a podcast - it's still on Apple and Google Podcasts - but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
