When You Are Engulfed In Flames was my very first foray into David Sedaris’ hilarious and vicious essays. Sedaris writes of his husband and his family, in sarcasm so caustic it is amazing that his family still speaks to him. I thoroughly enjoyed Sedaris’ take on life, his dripping cynicism causing more than several instances of laughing out loud. Taken on their own, each essay is humorous, but as a collection, the reader begins to know Sedaris and his likely take on the situations that he is relating. The humour is at times dark, quirky, angry, bitter, but hilarious. (And yes, his sister is Amy Sedaris!) 323 pages
