Claire Cameron’s The Bear is a thriller told from the perspective of a five year old girl named Anna White, whose parents are killed in a bear attack at Algonquin Park in Ontario, and she must take care of her two year old brother Stick in an effort to survive. I loved reading something so challenging from the perspective of a worried little girl, who did not know how to comprehend her situation, and did not know how to save herself or her brother, but did her best. As a mother of small children, it was gripping, and found myself “talking” to Anna, wishing I could help her, and scoop up the small babies and take care of them. Written with with grammar of a five year old and the communication style of a five year old, I did feel it was well done. It is suspenseful, beguiling and Anna is adorable. Worth the read. 208 pages.
