Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (the Notorious RBG) is enjoying a surge in popularity for the last several years as a liberal, feminist icon, simply for following her instincts and beliefs. RBG is a biography of her personal life, legal career and boundary pushing life. Readers soon learn that while Ginsburg was the first woman to do many things, she never intended to lead a subversive lifestyle. She attended law school, while married with children. She quietly disassembled barriers, walking where men only trod before her, without making a fuss. Clearly, her self possession and typically “feminine” demeanour helped her dismantle the misogyny of her time. Her husband viewed her as a partner and she him. Her votes in the courts have been thoughtful, and now serves as a role model for women. That said, the biographers had a clear liberal bias and, while RBG is a thorough and thoughtful account of her life, the biographers made no attempt to conceal their clear affection for the Justice. If you are interested in modern American history, and law; or a desire to understand more about strong, female icons, Notorious RBG is an enjoyable, and a non-fusty history lesson.
