We Bought A Zoo by Benjamin Mee is a true story of his nomadic family buying a zoo with Mee’s family and their inheritance from his deceased father. Mee, a father of two, writer, and husband of Katherine Mee, had experience uprooting his family to live different experiences, having sold their London flat and moved to Provence. While there, his wife developed a brain tumour, and required treatment. On little more than an impulse, Mee and his mother decided to buy a dilapidated zoo in Devon, England, and to fix it up and create from it a tourist destination. Mee recounts the fear and sadness of his wife’s cancer, the trials and tribulations of family life, the beaurocracy of opening a zoo and caring for wild animals, the love he feels for the animals. The book was made into a movie in 2011 starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. Having not seen the movie, I cannot compare the two, however, the book is a genuine and moving story. Readers who loved Wild by Cheryl Strayed, or books in that vein, will be entranced by We Bought A Zoo. At 261 pages, it is a comfortable read and doesn’t feel overwhelming. #weboughtazoo #benjaminmee #movietieins #movie #memoir #truestory #love #cancer #animals #zoo #inheritance #family #kids #mattdamon #scarlettjohansson #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #2008 #book #books #read #reading #bibliophile #kalidesautelsreads

I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been "super married" to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.
My first book - How Not To Blog: Finding Myself, One Post at a Time is available on Amazon (in eBook formats for you clever tech readers, and paperback for those of us who love that new book smell!)
I have tried a podcast - it's still on Apple and Google Podcasts - but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
