Originally intended to simply focus on book reviews, over time, KaliDesautelsReads has morphed into its own entity.
I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been “super married” to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.

I have tried a podcast – it’s still on Apple and Google Podcasts – but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
Do all things with love. What does that mean to you? Love for yourself? Love for your family? Love for your friends? Love for humanity? Love for your job? Love for Mother Earth? Love for your God? Love for animals?
For me it means all of those:
•love myself = mental, spiritual, and physical health
•love my family = walking along side each one as much as possible, helping where I can, listening where I can, or sending incessant gifs wherever (in)appropriate
•love my friends = listening to them, helping where I can, genuinely caring for them, thoughtful gifts (I was raised with “little I love you’s” and giving is definitely one of my love languages)
•love for humanity = do all things with kindness, speak for those who cannot, and in essence – do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Or as Michelle Obama says “when they go low, we go high”. Respect the cultures, beliefs, and pain suffered by others, and learn from it. Learn it well and without defensiveness.
•love my job = do my tasks to the best of my ability, be available, and genuinely, truly care about the outcome of my tasks. Respect the organization by sharing our good works whenever possible, and striving to bring success to my team
•love for Mother Earth = lowering my carbon footprint, teaching my children and modelling low waste behaviours, making small changes every day to respect her, and take moments every day to appreciate her in all her beauty, in all her turmoil, in all her spirit
•love my God = remaining connected to my spiritual, optimistic, and ritualistic beliefs.
•love for animals = creating an environment where they are safe and loved. A space where they are not harmed for frivolity. This one has taken me the longest to achieve. I spent most of my life ranging from fearful of to ambivalent to animals. It is only with the adoption and eventual mutual love for my ragamuffin Timon that I have learned to appreciate and find beauty in most animals (and also through Rhe Rhe. She is seriously persuasive!!!)

I was reminded today of one of the great oratory passages of the 20th Century today. I was reminded that we are fighting our own battles, and that we are all going to get criticism. We can either let the critics cause us to flee, and feel ashamed, or we can take the critiques, and keep going. Use them to make us stronger, or use them as a reason to quit. No one can fight our battles for us, and no one can give up for us.
The Man in the Arena

My girl is finished her second year of musical theatre. I have watched her throw her whole heart into James and the Giant Peach, learning the lines and lyrics to every single part including her own. I have watched her battle her reticence to speak up, her anxiety, her personal challenges, and develop her confidence on and off stage. I have watched as she let her inner comedienne loose, and laughed and found joy in her expressive character. Today, I got to stand with her in the wings as she prepared for her final performance of the year. My sweet girl, taller than the others, but still my little one, standing slightly closer than usual, but not quite reaching for my hand; I know that she was happy I was there, but also strong enough in that moment to not need me to physically hold her.
This is being her mom. This is my girl, from the moment she was born. This is the kid who made me a mom. This is the kid of my dreams, better than I ever imagined, filling me with pride and love. This is my girl, right before her very last dance of the year, before she strode confidently onto the stage, and out of her comfort zone.
Happy birthday, Dave! We are midway through 2019, which has definitely been the hardest of our 20 years together, and the hardest of your 35 years on this earth. I am so proud of you, and grateful for you. You are so brave, and in this awful situation you have found ways to bring joy, and to work to open your Etsy shop. You have found your voice as an artist and as a person living into your truth. I love you so much. Happy birthday, babe.
Seriously! Look how pretty this cake is!! Our friend knew that Dave’s birthday is tomorrow and that I would definitely not be baking tonight, so she took it upon herself to make her 3rd ever cake. One of Dave’s all-time favourite cakes is Funfetti, and he only likes a small amount of icing, so he was pretty thrilled when this showed up at our door this evening!!
You guys don’t even know how much we appreciate this. For 6 months, we have been living with cancer in our family, and there are so many people who have unflagging in your support. Thank you so much!
There is beauty everywhere. This gorgeous rose bush is in an industrial park in a suburban town, exactly where you do not stop to look for lovely things, passing through on the way to other places.

The look of wonder at the beautiful creatures of the sea.
One of my closest friend’s worked for the Canadian Border Control Service in BC, and explained that when aquatic animals or reptiles are seized at our border from smugglers, they cannot be safely returned to their native countries easily, if at all. This leaves the problem of how to care for these creatures, without harming Vancouver’s ecosystems. She explained that as much as the Vancouver Aquarium has been maligned for housing wildlife, they are the place that most often rescues aquatic animals and reptiles that would otherwise be euthanized.
So, with their current focus on demonstrating how plastic is filling the oceans, and their rescue efforts of animals that will no longer be able to part of their native habitat, through the illegal wildlife trade, I am happy that my friend took my daughter on the weekend to see these beautiful creatures and to understand why we are low waste and using metal instead of disposable straws.
