Originally intended to simply focus on book reviews, over time, KaliDesautelsReads has morphed into its own entity.
I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been “super married” to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.
My first book – How Not To Blog: Finding Myself, One Post at a Time is available on Amazon (in eBook formats for you clever tech readers, and paperback for those of us who love that new book smell!)
I have tried a podcast – it’s still on Apple and Google Podcasts – but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
There is something magical about a puppy who is afraid of everything learning to be brave. Poppy is such a funny, smart, clever, energetic girl, and we got to have a fun puppy play date to celebrate her turning 1.
We were also celebrating that she and her puppy cousin are the best of friends. And that Poppy has allowed more people into her life, letting us love her and loving (ish) is back. Seeing Poppy getting so excited when she saw Sadie in her backyard, and watching them wrestle under the table (with an entire house and lovely backyard to play in) is a huge reason to celebrate.
And, I mean, cotton candy flavoured KD (the taste of the devil), Flaming Hot Cheetos Mac and Cheese, and a fancy velveeta deluxe macaroni and cheese were pretty fun ways to celebrate.
For those of you who watched One Tree Hill, or a slew of adorable Christmas shows, or White Collar, you will recognize Hilarie Burton Morgan. This memoir is a fun, funny, and cute read about a young woman finding her joy in the simple things – life partnership, children, donkeys, alpacas, and growing things from the land. Written in the style of a friend sharing what they have been up to for the last few years, the reader feels engrossed in the story and falls as deeply in love with Rhinebeck, NY as Burton Morgan falls in love with the village and becomes part of the fabric of her community.
She makes it very clear that the dream of Hollywood did not fulfill her, and that her marriage is wonderful and hard and takes work, but as is demonstrated through all of her stories, the things that mean the most to her take work and are so worth it in the end. I must say that this book gave me a serious desire to give up my suburban lifestyle and go find myself a farm with chickens and enjoy the village lifestyle as she presents it.
This is a lovely read, and I recommend it as a nice end of summer book. It is the type of book that you can read by the pool, or with a glass of wine, or devour (as I did) in one sitting.
Repost @aclu_nationwide Texas’ extreme abortion ban, SB8, is a full-scale assault on patients, our health care providers, and our support systems. It’s blatantly unconstitutional.
It’s September 1st!! The days are getting colder, the sun is waking up later and going to bed earlier, and we are one week away from back to school!
I love mornings like this – where there is fog, and a chill in the air, and the sun trying to break through. I know saying I love Fall makes me Basic, or cheuggy or whatever, but I do, and I am.
Now for my second cup of coffee sprinkled with pumpkin spice.
