Welcome to 2021. This year will be… 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months, 8760 hours, 525600 minutes, and 31536000 seconds.
Some of these moments will inevitably be wonderful, amazing and transformative. Some of the moments will inevitably be hard, awful and transformative.
This is life. This is what John Lennon said happens when we are busy making other plans. This is what we wake up every day and get to live in. We measure our lives in time – minutes, hours, days, weeks, etc. – but we don’t LIVE life by time.
We live through experiences and love and hard seasons and happiness and births and deaths and sickness and health and trees and sunsets and sparkles and smiles and coffee and lipstick and kissing and cats and dogs and kids and magic and books and all the trillions of tiny things that happen every single minute of every single day of every single year for every single one of us.
Will 2021 be perfect? Resoundingly YES! And also, heartbreakingly NO!
Because that is life. Because that is how life has always been and always will be. Because we are still in the midst of COVID-19. Because we are still working for real and honest change for marginalized groups. Because people are still dying. Because babies are still being born. Because puppies are finding their people and people are find them. Because our cats still love us. Because humans are strong. Because kindness is strong. Because belief is strong. Because hope is strong.
To quote one of my favourite Broadway tunes : how do you measure a year in a life?
