Kali J Desautels

Welcome to my little corner of the internet.

Sooooo I started and finished this entire book in one sitting last night. I am always interested in religious teaching and philosophy, but it has been a while since I have read a book on Christianity. I am so, so, so glad that I was recommended Interrupted: When Jesus Wrecks Your Comfortable Christianity by Jen Hatmaker. It is the reading of the Bible that I need in my life today; the reminder that my “take” on Christianity is not isolated, that there are many others in the world looking at Christians in the world and wonder where Christ is, in their Christianity. Those who forget that the homeless, the poor, the hungry, the suffering, those shoved to the edges are “Christ’s people”.

If you do not identify as Christian, this book may not be for you, as the Gospel is quoted A LOT, and the entire book is about Hatmaker and her husband planting and creating the Austin New Church from scratch, to become the “barefoot church of [their] dreams”. If you are comfortable with references to Christianity, then I recommend the book even as a memoir by a very funny, sarcastic, clever mom, who is working to see her dream come true. If you are not comfortable with Christian references, this is not the book for you. (I mean, Jesus’ name is right there in the subtitle!!)

Looks like a good read. Its interesting to think that Jesus was not a christian. He really did not like organised religion. He really wanted people to love God, not religion, to love people, and just do what God puts in front of you to do. Simple and practical.

It’s very true. It’s a very good read, and it’s so true that Jesus would never have been a Christian as we know it now. He told us to simply do good and help.
