I am the mom who goes to the grocery store in a TARDIS onesie; the one who doesn’t always brush her own hair, let alone ensure my kids are in matching socks; the one that tells her son that the reason he feels embarrassed to get a manicure is toxic masculinity, and sticks him in a feminist T-shirt from the time he can pronounce the word. I am the mom who takes her kids to see Avengers movies if Benedict Cumberbatch is them because… I don’t think I need to explain that…; the mom who has more laundry than can have possibly been used in the last 3 months; the mom who thinks having a stack of books in every corner of the house is actually good for her kids; the mom who will sit down to read a book rather than mop her kitchen floor every. single. day. of. the. week. I am the weird mama who wears gold sequins chucks because she has them, a TARDIS headband for her best friend’s wedding, because why wouldn’t I? The mom who buys Women of NASA LEGO because it is awesome; the mom who doesn’t care if her kid wants to know what mayonnaise feels like; the mom who thinks singing Disney songs is important, but is against the patriarchal ideals that sublimate the princess stories. And I am not in the least bit ashamed. If my kids learn anything from their weird mom, I want them to know that they are allowed to be themselves, and that they need to speak their truths and they need to stand up for their beliefs. If they want pink hair, go for it. If they want to wear superhero capes every single day, go for it. I want their weird mama to teach them that shame is pointless, human rights are non-negotiable, and that there is ALWAYS time for nonsense.
