Originally intended to simply focus on book reviews, over time, KaliDesautelsReads has morphed into its own entity.
I write about issues that are near to my heart, be they political, feminist, motherhood, mental health, or, as the title holds, books.
A thirty-something Canadian woman in my mid-thirties, I have been “super married” to my high school sweetheart since 2006, and together we have two crazy, clever, kind, hilarious, wonderful kids.
My first book – How Not To Blog: Finding Myself, One Post at a Time is available on Amazon (in eBook formats for you clever tech readers, and paperback for those of us who love that new book smell!)
I have tried a podcast – it’s still on Apple and Google Podcasts – but writing is where my heart is.
My life changed dramatically when my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2018, and I am now a writer for a leading Canadian Cancer Non-Profit.
I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and pushes me to be my best, even if it is outside of my cushiony comfort zone. I have a village of friends that nourish me, mentally, and spiritually.
Welcome to my thoughts. Sit down. Stay a while. Enjoy a cup of coffee!
What better book to read for Passover than the story of Cain and Abel? The humour in this book it biting and the descriptions are bare. Full review to come whenever I manage to finish it! 🤣
chag Pesach samech! .
This book is available for purchase on my Amazon Storefront! Link in bio!! 👆👆👆
Messy bun, getting things done! Working a day in lieu, to make room for my husband’s next round of cancer treatment, so I am trying to look presentable AND feel comfy lol
I could not be more thrilled about this!! Gomae Meal Prep has created the most amazing meal prep delivery ever – plant-based, low waste, local, yummy and delivered right to my door. I have thoroughly enjoyed other meal prep delivery services, but the struggle for our family has been the waste produced by each meal. With Gomae, everything comes in durable, reusable containers or compostable parchment, in a reusable cooler bag with a reusable ice pack. So far the food has been filling and delicious, and it made my meal so much more enjoyable for having been ready to go in the fridge at work, and made for me by someone else 🤣
Thank you soooooooo much!! My sister and my nephew sent me welcome back to work flowers and they literally brightened my whole day!! I’m so grateful!! I love them!!
My first week of zero-waste, plant-based meals arrived last night. So my morning snack today are these yummy, sweet and spicy protein balls. I’m looking forward to trying the other goodies that came in the cooler bag!
Reading time at the Desautels’ house. My girl is reading Humble the Poet’s 101 Simple Truths For A Better Life, while my boy is reading JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone aloud to me. Three people with two books piled on one couch for a perfect end to a long day.
Dave has gotten into making leather goods… and he “gave” this to me (aka I helped myself…)
His first piece, from design to finished cuff, was completed created by him. So I am feeling very Mother of Dragons today. I told my coworkers that I will come dressed like Danaerys every day now. If you would like a lovely, custom design check out @stagethreestudio and his Etsy shop!
6 years ago today, the world was introduced to the semicolon project. I am the proud bearer of a semicolon tattoo, and am grateful for the fact that there is a broader understanding of mental health, suicide, depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
Happy birthday to the most vibrant, exuberant, cursing-like-a-sailor, loving, funniest, most generous, smartest, cleverest, adventurous, picky, colourful, wine-drinking Memere in the universe. I love you so much and am so grateful for you and to you!

Jupiter Retrograde. Hiii. Thank you for showing me those cool things I can do; those things I happen to be good at. Especially the things I thought were IMPORTANT to be good at.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve found myself being invited to do things that used to feel good for me. I REMEMBER how good they felt to do, too. And yet now, something about me, the experiencer of those things, is different. These old experiences I remember don’t quite have the same euphoric feeling that they once did.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And you know, I think that’s OK. It doesn’t necessarily mean those experiences are now “bad”. In fact, quite the opposite. I can reflect back and remember how good they felt, but accept that they belong back then, feeling good, and not carried into my “now”. Because if I do that, they don’t feel good here, and I want to remember them as the gifts that they were to me. Then.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It means that I have grown into a new shape, and that new shape fits in different places, or is exploring fitting in new places (Jupiter in Sagittarius = pushing boundaries).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am finding that I am invited to these experiences – and as I’m experiencing them ooone final time, I am struck with a clear lightning bolt that they are no longer for me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For example, I don’t like that now, every time I pick up a crystal, I don’t feel so great about it. Every time I burn a leaf, I don’t feel so great about it.
Use a hashtag.
Say a word.
OK, well why don’t I feel so great about it?
Because so much of my experience has been about sharing what I like and how it makes me feel. I like sharing my excitement. And now that my awareness has expanded, I realize that every time I share them, they contribute to this over consumption culture, a side effect of this current reality’s optical illusion of what is important. … but I DID once love them.
OK Vaness, then leave them back there, where they feel good. And give yourself permission to expand (Jupiter) in the places that feel good. You don’t have to hang on to things you’ve outgrown.
