10 years ago my little man got his first pair of glasses! ❤️❤️❤️
I’ll never forget walking with him and him really seeing everything for the first time. He knelt down to pet the grass growing through the sidewalk, he noticed all the parents at daycare pick up, he spent the first two years trying to look around his glasses when he was eating.

“White Teeth is a 2000 novel by the British author Zadie Smith. It focuses on the later lives of two wartime friends—the Bangladeshi Samad Iqbal and the Englishman Archie Jones—and their families in London. The novel is centered on Britain’s relationship with immigrants from the British Commonwealth.”
I loved this book. It covered so many characters and so many sides of the same issues. Essentially a family saga about two families in an immigrant community in England, and an English family.
Part of what is wonderful about White Teeth is that it is the incomparable Zadie Smith’s debut novel, 22 years ago. I really recommend that you give this book a try if you haven’t picked it up before. Not your typical summer read, at an impressive 480 pages, it is funny and beautiful.

The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler is one of my favourite books. I have re-read it so many times that I actually had to buy another copy when I misplaced my original one.
It is a family saga about Pauline and Michael who marry during the fervour of WWII and the trials and tribulations of a couple who never quite seem to get the hang of marriage, and the fallout of their choices on their children and on themselves.
I am pulling this out to suggest as a wonderful summer read. It is great for at the beach or on an airplane or while camping. The story keeps me engaged every time and the characters remind me of people that I know. They even remind me of myself at times.
If you are looking for an easy summer read, I would highly suggest this one. It is only 342 pages and my version is the pocketbook one, so it’s easy to tote around.

Hi! I am Kali. (No, seriously – I said “Kay-Lee”. No, not Callie. Kaylee. I promise.) it’s nice to meet you! Thanks for stopping by! I love the share things that make me smile or make me mad or that I care about or that I think others should care about. I am a hot mess more than half of the time, but I am also doing my best at least as often. I love to write and read. I am a mama and a wife and a fur mama and a friend and a sister and a daughter. I have bipolar disorder 2, so I speak a lot about mental health and advocate for mental health awareness. I am a feminist and strive to be an ally but know that I have more to learn than I will ever know. I am Canadian and care about politics, social Justice and civil rights. I work in non-profit and love my job more than I can express. I want to do better for our planet. I want to do better for my kids and their kids. I am overly-sensitive and am quick to cry but also quick to laugh. I try to be a good listener and I love an awful lot.
And I think that’s enough about me. What about you? Who are you and what do you love?

“A dazzling debut novel set against the backdrop of the Chinese Exclusion Act, about a Chinese girl fighting to claim her place in the 1880s American West
Daiyu never wanted to be like the tragic heroine for whom she was named, revered for her beauty and cursed with heartbreak. But when she is kidnapped and smuggled across an ocean from China to America, Daiyu must relinquish the home and future she imagined for herself. Over the years that follow, she is forced to keep reinventing herself to survive. From a calligraphy school, to a San Francisco brothel, to a shop tucked into the Idaho mountains, we follow Daiyu on a desperate quest to outrun the tragedy that chases her. As anti-Chinese sentiment sweeps across the country in a wave of unimaginable violence, Daiyu must draw on each of the selves she has been—including the ones she most wants to leave behind—in order to finally claim her own name and story.
At once a literary tour de force and a groundbreaking work of historical fiction, Four Treasures of the Sky announces Jenny Tinghui Zhang as an indelible new voice. Steeped in untold history and Chinese folklore, this novel is a spellbinding feat.”

This novel by Isabel Allende is one of the best books I have read in years. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
“ABOUT VIOLETA [ENGLISH EDITION]
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This sweeping novel from the author of A Long Petal of the Sea tells the epic story of Violeta Del Valle, a woman whose life spans one hundred years and bears witness to the greatest upheavals of the twentieth century.
“An immersive saga about a passion-filled life.”—People
Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first girl in a family with five boisterous sons. From the start, her life is marked by extraordinary events, for the ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth.
Through her father’s prescience, the family will come through that crisis unscathed, only to face a new one as the Great Depression transforms the genteel city life she has known. Her family loses everything and is forced to retreat to a wild and beautiful but remote part of the country. There, she will come of age, and her first suitor will come calling.
She tells her story in the form of a letter to someone she loves above all others, recounting times of devastating heartbreak and passionate affairs, poverty and wealth, terrible loss and immense joy. Her life is shaped by some of the most important events of history: the fight for women’s rights, the rise and fall of tyrants, and ultimately not one, but two pandemics.
Through the eyes of a woman whose unforgettable passion, determination, and sense of humor carry her through a lifetime of upheaval, Isabel Allende once more brings us an epic that is both fiercely inspiring and deeply emotional.” – PenguinRandomHouse
