It’s a Saturday night and I’m reading The Betrayal of Anne Frank. A book about a young girl whose life was stolen by hatred, scapegoating, and fascism. And it feels painfully relevant.
I’m reading it because it’s terrifying to see history’s warnings ignored. Fascism is on the rise in North America — and here in Canada, too many people are turning a blind eye to dehumanizing rhetoric and policies dressed up as “common sense.” Watching so many Canadians line up behind Pierre Poilievre, a man whose language otherizes, marginalizes, and scapegoats vulnerable communities, is chilling.
Books like this remind us where that path leads.
We owe it to Anne — and to every person whose life was lost or shattered by fascism — to remember, to speak up, and to refuse to be silent bystanders.
