I have deep disdain for everything J.K. Rowling stands for, but I can’t deny that this quote from Harry Potter has stuck with me. Living with mental illness means grappling with thoughts and emotions that can feel intangible, fleeting, or overwhelming—and this line has always reminded me that just because something is happening in my head doesn’t mean it isn’t real or valid. My experiences, struggles, and triumphs are real, even if they exist within the confines of my mind.
It’s complicated to carry meaning from a work when the author represents values I stand against, but this particular sentiment resonates with my journey toward self-acceptance.
Have you ever had something meaningful come from an unlikely or uncomfortable source? Let me know.
