It’s Canada Day, and while some celebrate with their families, and others attend large community festivities, for many it is a painful, or fraught day.
There are many privileges that being Canadian can afford you, such as socialized healthcare, and gun control, but there is also systemic racism, the fact that the government continues to ignore the 94 recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a continued history of colonialism… just to make a few.
Please remember while watching the fireworks tonight that you are likely standing on the historical and unceded territories of a First Nation. Remember while we enjoy a day off that there are more than 10,000 unmarked graves around residential “schools”. Remember that acknowledging the pain that Canada Day causes is not politically correct, it is just correct.
Most of all, remember that this is our home ON native land.
