Kali J Desautels

Welcome to my little corner of the internet.

Today is an interesting paradox – I love my country, and am proud to be a Canadian, glad to have the privilege of birthplace; while at the same time, the celebration of Canada Day is the whitewashing of my First Nations ancestry – we act as though Canada was born in on July 1st, 1867, but that indicates that we weren’t here before that day. In truth, First Nations people, including my ancestors who would eventually be relegated to the status of non-white AND non-aboriginal Métis, were here for millennia BEFORE 1867. So, as you proudly wear your red and white, and eat your hot dogs, and drink your beer, and enjoy not having to work on a Monday, please remember that our history stems back thousands of years before colonization, and that if you are truly celebrating Canada today, you are celebrating ALL parts of Canada, not just the forming of a white nation imposing its values on ancient people’s.
