My girl is finished her second year of musical theatre. I have watched her throw her whole heart into James and the Giant Peach, learning the lines and lyrics to every single part including her own. I have watched her battle her reticence to speak up, her anxiety, her personal challenges, and develop her confidence on and off stage. I have watched as she let her inner comedienne loose, and laughed and found joy in her expressive character. Today, I got to stand with her in the wings as she prepared for her final performance of the year. My sweet girl, taller than the others, but still my little one, standing slightly closer than usual, but not quite reaching for my hand; I know that she was happy I was there, but also strong enough in that moment to not need me to physically hold her.
This is being her mom. This is my girl, from the moment she was born. This is the kid who made me a mom. This is the kid of my dreams, better than I ever imagined, filling me with pride and love. This is my girl, right before her very last dance of the year, before she strode confidently onto the stage, and out of her comfort zone.
