One of my closest friend’s worked for the Canadian Border Control Service in BC, and explained that when aquatic animals or reptiles are seized at our border from smugglers, they cannot be safely returned to their native countries easily, if at all. This leaves the problem of how to care for these creatures, without harming Vancouver’s ecosystems. She explained that as much as the Vancouver Aquarium has been maligned for housing wildlife, they are the place that most often rescues aquatic animals and reptiles that would otherwise be euthanized.

So, with their current focus on demonstrating how plastic is filling the oceans, and their rescue efforts of animals that will no longer be able to part of their native habitat, through the illegal wildlife trade, I am happy that my friend took my daughter on the weekend to see these beautiful creatures and to understand why we are low waste and using metal instead of disposable straws.
